Training Center
Our training center offers two fully matted training rings designed to
optimize all aspects of dog training. We offer education for YOU - teaching
you how to teach your dog to obey your commands. The actual training and
practice is your responsibility. You must plan to train your dog for ten to
fifteen minutes each day to get the full benefit of any training class.
Training Location
The KCKC Training Center is located on Hwy 169, approximately 1/4 mile
southwest of the Hwy 169/Hwy 68 intersection right
next to Gag's Campers in the back of the Praxair building (formerly Mankato
Oil). See map
for details.
Training Goals
~ To train your dog to be a good family member and canine citizen.
~ To develop a bond between you and your dog built on mutual trust and
respect.
~ To teach YOU to teach and understand your dog.
~ To introduce you to the wonderful sport of dog training.
We believe in FIRM, FAIR, CONSISTENT training with heavy doses of PRAISE and

Class Information
Key City
Kennel Club offers Puppy Socialization, Companion Dog Training, and competition
classes in obedience, agility and conformation. Purebred and
mixed breed dogs of all ages are welcomed. Class size is limited to optimize
learning. Classes are offered in January, March, June, and September on
more than one day a week to fit your busy schedule. To sign up for the next
available eight-week session, contact Lynn Davey, Training Director, at
507-344-1159 or ldavey@myclearwave.net
or check out our schedule
page.
Puppy Socialization
This class is designed for the new puppy (8 - 14 weeks when class begins) in
your life! Any puppy which has received its second "puppy
shot" is welcomed. The class will be like kindergarten - exploring
all sorts of new smells, sounds and textures for the newest member of your
family. You will be introduced to basic training concepts and prepare
your puppy for further training. Join us for six weeks of one half-hour
sessions designed to fit your puppy's attention span.
Basic Training Class
This is an eight-week course for older puppies (14 weeks and older) and dogs
(adult) without previous training or with less than eight weeks of previous
training. The KCKC Basic class teaches you the principles of positive
reinforcement training. You apply these principles while teaching your
dog controlled walking, sit, down, stand, come, and stay. You and your
dog will learn how to integrate these new skills in your day-to-day
living. Problem behaviors will be addressed as needed. A
certificate of completion (and a treat for your dog) will be earned at the
end of this class.
Practical I Obedience Class
This is an eight-week course that will strengthen and expand the
behaviors learned in the Basic Training class. Teamwork between you and
your dog will be emphasized as well as learning to deal with distractions on
or off-leash. At the end of this session your dog should be able to
earn AKC's Canine Good Citizen title.
Practical II Obedience Class
A continuation of Practical I with an emphasis on competition in obedience
and agility, this class is designed for the people who are interested in
increasing their control of the dog off-leash.
Novice Preparation/Advanced Class
The KCKC Novice Prep class will hone you and your dog into a team capable
of earning the Companion Dog title at AKC obedience competitions. Dogs
will be introduced to retrieving the dumbbell, down on recall, and jumping
from the Open class exercises.
Open Obedience Class
This class preps you and your dog for entering AKC Open competition.
Beginning Utility exercises will be introduced during this class, also.
Agility I Class
This class introduces you and your dog to the sport of agility by working on
conditioning and flexibility for "man and beast," laying a solid
foundation for successful agility competition, and introduces many pieces of
agility equipment - jumps, tunnel, tire jump, weave poles, teeter-totter, and
dog walk. Dogs entering this class must be non-dog aggressive and
respond quickly and reliably to the "Come" command off-leash.
Agility II and III
Advanced agility classes expand on the basics and prepare your dog for
competition at AKC Novice agility trials.
Agility IV
This class is for dogs with Novice agility titles preparing for Open
competition.
Rally Obedience
This class is designed to familiarize the dog/handler team with the sport
of Rally Obedience. In Rally Obedience the dog/handler team proceeds at
their own pace through a course of designated stations, each of which has a
sign providing instructions regarding the skills that are to be performed.
Dogs registering for Rally should have the equivalent of KCKC Basic and
Practical skills. For more information about Rally Obedience visit http://www.akc.org/dic/events/rally/index_rally.cfm
Conformation Class
This class is for people interested in showing their dog in breed competition
for championship points. It is designed to teach handler and dog what
is required to compete in dog shows. The experience is invaluable before
going out to compete.
